I’m going to say it – Modern psychotherapy just doesn’t seem to be cutting it any more. As dictated by the prevailing medical model, modern psychology often treats disorders and symptoms with prescriptions and scripted therapies rather than by treating human beings with compassion, understanding, and love. The ability of the prevailing model to effectively help the entire individual within the context of his or her life circumstances is lacking, and it often fails to generate lasting healing and change. I have heard time and time again that “the therapist just didn’t understand me” or “I felt better, but the results did not last”. In order to cultivate lasting healing and change, we need a holistic approach.
Holistic psychotherapy focuses on you as a whole person – body, mind, spirit, and environment. It honors you as a complex system made up of each of these elements, and it knows that when these elements are healthy and in balance, the whole system thrives! We will work together to balance the system.
If you undertake psychotherapy with me, expect to discuss sleep, nutrition, exercise, spirituality, sex and work alongside things like stress, depression, anxiety and relationship issues. You can expect to be listened to with real interest and empathy in an environment conducive to vulnerability and transformation. With Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as my guiding theoretical model, we will use mindfulness as a tool to better understand how your mind works. Further, we will help you to develop deep understanding, compassion and acceptance for yourself while designing a values-driven life that is both meaningful and sustainable.
You are taking a courageous first step by reaching out for help. Let’s take the next few steps together. I do not currently work with any insurance companies as they tend to limit – even dictate – treatment. I do, however, believe that money should never be a barrier to treatment, so I work on a generous sliding scale based on need. Please feel free to reach out to me at Mark@ReturnToYourBreath.com and we can discuss your needs and how I can help.
Thank you for being here. I am so glad you made it!
